The Swan River Dolphin Bones series

Heavy Metal Skeleton, 2022, graphite on paper, 103 x 76 cm

This series was originally started during Coates’ artist residency at Goolugatup Heathcote, in Western Australia. Wrapping around Goolugatup the Derbarl Yerrigan/Swan River is home to a resident population of around 20 Indo-Pacific Bottlenose dolphins. As long-living, apex predators, dolphins have been found to accumulate heavy metals in their bones. Metals found in the river at contaminant levels include lead, cadmium, zinc, copper, chromium and cobalt. This series was extended for rīvus: 23rd Biennale of Sydney, 2022.
